TechPoint opens applications for 20th anniversary ‘Best of Tech in Indiana’ Mira Awards

December 4, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (December 4, 2018) — TechPoint, the nonprofit, industry-led growth initiative for Indiana’s technology companies and overall tech ecosystem, will honor Indiana’s best cities, companies, entrepreneurs, educators, and other leaders for their tech achievements and innovations at the JW Marriott Indianapolis during the 20th Annual Mira Awards gala on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Applications for the 14 people, product and company categories as well as the new “place” awards category are now live at.

The Mira Awards is a six-month season of events and announcements that bring awareness and focus on Indiana’s tech, innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem. Combined, these activities drive venture investment, customer acquisition and heightened exposure worth millions of dollars to Indiana’s economy.

“Over the past 20 years, the Mira Awards have shined a bright light on Indiana’s growing tech ecosystem, highlighting the exceptional companies, products, talent and influential leaders who call our state home,” said Mike Langellier, president and CEO of TechPoint. “In 2018, several monumental developments pushed our tech community further into the national spotlight and we look forward to recognizing those successes along side the individual and company achievements of the past year.”

New this year is a “place” category that includes the Community Champion of the Year award and two brand new awards that recognize the achievements of communities — the  Rising Tech City Award, recognizing an Indiana community; and the Outside INspiration Award, which highlights an inspirational or aspirational community outside of Indiana.

Other changes to the award categories for 2019 include criteria changes and new names for the following: Rising Entrepreneur Award, Exceptional Employer Award, and Large  Enterprise of the Year.

TechPoint created the awards program in 1999, to recognize tech-related achievements and innovation statewide, and ultimately to stimulate future tech growth and entrepreneurship. Among recent Mira Award winners, many have increased sales, venture capital and talent attraction. In 2018, Mira Award applicants in the companies categories employed 55,500 people worldwide, 14,300+ people in Indiana, and generated $6.8+ billion in revenue.

“While the Mira Awards may be exclusive to Indiana, for us, they’ve had a national impact on our business,” said Lauren Howard, vice president of client success & marketing at FreightRover. “After winning the Startup of the Year Mira Award in April, we received many interested investor calls from across the US. It also improved our candidate pool for new hires. People would often reference our Mira Award as a reason they learned about our  company and decided to apply.”

“Since winning the Innovation of the Year Mira Award there has been a great surge in interest in WorkHere here in Indiana,” said Mike Seidle, COO and co-founder of WorkHere.  “From outside Indiana, we received calls from potential investors who saw our win as a signal that WorkHere is a leader, and it did directly lead to a round of funding.”

Any company, startup, scale-up, city, school, team or individual may apply for a “Best of Tech” Mira Award. It is not necessary to be nominated by someone else to apply. The Categories & Criteria Guide and the online application form are available at, and the application submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 18, 2019.

Fifty-two independent subject matter experts, who serve as judges, evaluate and rank the applications. The rankings determine which applicants become nominees. Next, nominees deliver presentations and answer questions in-person with one of the independent judging panels, and the judges deliberate and select the winners.

Winners of the 20th anniversary Mira Awards will be announced at a black-tie awards ceremony and gala featuring a reception and three-course seated dinner on Saturday, April 13, at the JW Marriott Indianapolis.
