Discover where your organization stands on the AI maturity curve and what to do next.
Artificial intelligence adoption doesn’t happen all at once. Most companies move through a series of stages as they learn what works, build skills, and begin applying AI to real business problems.
This assessment is based on the MIT Center for Information Systems Research AI Maturity Model, which tracks how organizations progress from early experimentation to fully integrating AI into everyday operations. The model was developed using surveys and research with hundreds of companies to understand how businesses actually adopt and scale AI.
The model used here adapts that research for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). While many AI maturity frameworks are designed for large enterprises with dedicated AI teams and formal governance structures, most SMBs adopt AI differently, through practical tools, software features, and workflow improvements. Instead of measuring technical complexity, the model focuses on practical capabilities: how companies identify opportunities, run pilot projects, prepare their data, train employees, and ultimately embed AI into the way work gets done.
The goal is simple: help leaders understand where they are today and what the next practical step looks like.
National research shows that most companies are still in the early stages of AI adoption. The majority of businesses are learning, experimenting, and testing practical use cases. Progress usually happens step by step. AI adoption behaves less like flipping a switch and more like building a muscle. The organizations that move steadily through these stages tend to capture the real productivity gains.
